What's cooking?

I found two reports among Dad's Navy papers:

A smart, intelligent, and cheerful young rating who has worked very well during his time in the service. His professional knowledge is very good and he has competed at Hotel Olympia, winning a certificate of Merit.  – HMS Collingwood, October 1957

Throughout his service, he has proved a capable and reliable cook who can produce above average (!) results. He has displayed drive and initiative and shown that he can lead his juniors. A loyal man with a pleasant, cheerful manner who will be a great loss to the service. – HMS Heron, November 1965
